Li'l Storm Chasers

Image
E&B plotting the latest weather shenanigans in the gulf. When I was a kid we did this all the time, but I guess no one does it any more. It's actually kind of hard to find out the storm coordinates now [try here ]. The kids were having so much fun we looked up the charts for a few historical hurricanes, too. Today is mine and Papi's 14th wedding anniversary. This is what happens when nerds mate.

You Can Express Your Thanks in Twenties

Billy Reid has a last.fm library . Drive By Truckers, Gillian Welch, The Temptations ... lots of good stuff. Many thanks Vogue on the Range for for the tip.

Reading Perhaps not my favorite of her books (sorry to say). Watching Listening to Reminds me, more than anything else, of the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack.

Finally, a Movie Worth Watching in Theaters. And It's 2D.

Sofia Coppola has a movie coming out in December called Somewhere . The exciting thing is that it was filmed at the Chateau Marmont, which I've always wanted to see -- you'll know why once you see the trailer. Gracias, Mr. Kottke

Boeing-Boeing

Tonight I'm going to see Boeing Boeing at the Alley Theatre [sic]. The New York Times review said it was really funny. How can it be bad if one of the characters is a French Existentialist maid?

For the Record, I Like Sage the Best.

"You can't take rejection personally. You have to say, 'Well, that dumbass just didn't know any better.'" Words of wisdom from the Sausage King of Plainview.

Can it be Mother's Day again?

Arm sold separately? Leather + canvas= swoon Never seen one like it; really cool, no? Damn that Joslyn -- every time I read her blog I put something else on my wishlist.

Reading Does this count as reading? I say yes. Watching Finally. Sandra Bullock was good, but the screenwriting and directing left a lot to be desired. My opinion is colored by enthusiasm for the book, though. Watching That is one DARK fucking movie. Funny, but dark .

Made my day.

Documentary Duds

Born Rich Is there a valley in Manhattan? Why do these people all talk like Moon Unit Zappa? Maxed Out Definitely making its own point of view, as evidenced by the first title card, in a scene with a successful realtor: "This is the same type of accounting used by Enron." At times [a lot of times] maudlin, but there was good information in there. The interviews with academics were particularly enlightening. Can't say I recommend it, though.

The fun continues

King Corn Well done in that it espouses no political point of view. I like that they treated all of their interview subjects with respect, even the spokeswoman for the high fructose corn syrup industry. [She looked like an extra from Working Girl and seemed to be reading from an Epcot "Farm of the Future" script.] The Botany of Desire I like Michael Pollan a lot more than I thought I would, based on the whole, "Eat food. Mostly plants..." nag. Totally fascinating movie.
