"My Hips Don't Lie:

You look like an idiot."

The main reason I don't work out (aside from sloth) is that it's just so damn boring. So I had this idea that I would try a new workout every week to combat the boredom and possibly find something I like to do. I had not acted on this resolution, of course, because of the sloth thing. But Saturday night my friends Dawn and Sophia announced that they were going to a Zumba class at the Y on Sunday afternoon, and I was really out of excuses. So I went along.

Zumba--"Latin dance-inspired to create a fun and and dynamic workout. Includes a fusion of Latin and international music in combination with body sculpting movements and easy-to-follow dance steps." [Ed. note: HA.]

I found that the easiest way to get through it was to stand directly behind somebody, so I could see the instructor while not having to watch myself flailing about. Sophia and Dawn fared a little better, which I ascribe to the fact that they are actually sexy Latinas and not, you know, me. I think I should try some kind of dance workout for the neurologically challenged. So ... line dancing?

Zumba:
Pros: challenging; Latin dance music >>> regular dance music
Cons: being in a funk all day because I felt soooo lame
Day-after soreness: quads, knees and calves; pride
Available at the 34th St. YMCA.

  1. We have a zumba-ish class here (Charlotte, NC) that is really fun. Zumba, hip hop, swing, etc dance moves for an hour. I find that I'm focusing so much on getting the moves and laughing with my friends that I don't realize I just did an hour of squats. :)
Keep at it and good luck!

  2. I so want to take Zumba. Have to get the ankle a little stronger, and the neck (post car accident), and I'm there! For the moment, I'm fighting the slothy thing too.

My office roomie does Zumba and loves it. Says it kicks her ass everytime. But well worth it.
