Summer Book Club

Who wants to have a Summer Book Club? (Mom? Anybody?)

I thought we could try to read one book a week through the end of the summer. Below are some of my suggestions; leave yours in the comments. There are a few simple rules, though:

1) NO DEAD BABIES

Okay, that’s all I can think of, though I reserve the right to promulgate additional rules on the spot as necessary. As soon as we get at least ten nominees, I'll put up a poll so we can vote on the books. I figure we have nine weeks left until Labor Day.

    I'd love to do this! I'll second the idea of the Sedaris.

    But there is no way I can do a book a week (sadly). Can I join in and drop out as needed?

    I'm up for the Sedaris as well, but I also nominate Sara Bird's "How Perfect is That" which I happened to buy recently at Costco... :)

    I vote for Jincy Willett. I'm up for Sedaris, but I think a lot of the pieces in the book have already been in the New Yorker, so we will be re-reading. As for other suggestions, "Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy" by Robert Leleux, or possibly "What It Is" by Lynda Barry might be fun.

    I like Sedaris, but really, once you have read one, you have read them all...

    I am up for anything, though. Next on my personal list is Animal, Vegetable, Miracle; A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver. It's kinda a memoir, NOT fiction.

    I thought The Writing Class looked good.
    Oh wait, now I 'm thinking. I'm reading White Teeth next, but Mamacita, you recommended that already. I just read A Beautiful Boy (different from Letitia's), but it's a bummer. No dead babies but still really sad (meth addiction).

    I can't do sad this summer. I've sworn it off for July and August.

    Right now, I can barely read the back of my shampoo bottle, I'm run ragged. I'm in as soon as we return from vacation, tell me what to pick up at the airport bookstore!

    Ohhhh. I read "I Capture the Castle". I found it at the all-free bookstore. It's a sweet little book.

Reading/ Watching/ Listening

 Reading: The Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. I didn't like it nearly as much as A Gentleman in Moscow . In fact, I liked it only barely enough to keep reading. Watching: Poker Face , on Peacock. Papi and I have enjoyed watching this, one episode at a time, and not every day. It's a little formulaic, but the sets and the guest stars are fun. I like that it changes scenery every episode. Listening to: The Beatles Channel, Sirius XM. Ever since watching Get Back , the Beatles documentary, I've enjoyed listening to them with new ears.

And so right now, even though I’d rather be writing gift guides and assorted other nonsense, I’m just going to rant. Emmet has Asperger’s Syndrome. Look it up. It’s a disorder related to Autism, but sufferers are said to be “high functioning.” Just looking at him, you’d never know that anything was wrong. But if you spend some time with him, you’ll see that he has trouble with social functioning. Asperger’s sufferers (they call themselves “Aspies”) aren’t good at self-reflection, and they aren’t good at picking up on social cues.
